I am so excited to finally be sharing my new website. I have spent the last several months learning the backend of WordPress/CSS, designing the layout and writing new content. I can’t believe I officially have my own .com. It seems silly, but after growing up along with the Internet, it feels like I finally have a forever home. I’ve seen sites come and go (RIP GeoCites, OpenDiary, Xanga and Myspace), but this site will hopefully be around as long as I am. What a crazy thought, a 70 year old website..
Anyway! In celebration of my new website, and moving to Los Angeles, I wanted to share one of my favorite things about being in a big city, magazines. It sounds a little strange, but one of the first things I wanted to do when I got here was check out the magazine selection. In Iowa, there just aren’t very many options. So my first full day here, my Aunt Mary took me over to Skylight Books. While the name has changed, the store itself has been around for a long time, my Uncle Clare even worked there! I was thrilled to see a huge selection of both magazines and zines. I picked out a few that share similar content as my blog to share with you!
Razorcake is a punk rock fanzine published here in LA. It includes everything from music reviews, band interviews and even comics. Tom Tom Magazine is about female drummers, which might seem a little odd, but it was a huge creative influence when I was writing my own zine. This issue is all about health, from yoga to hearing damage. Next is a back issue of Paper from March 2016. Cover girl, Lena Dunham, has kind of been of my crap-list since her endorsement of my not-so-favorite person, but there are interviews in this issue with tons of awesome ladies like Emma Watson and Cher. But, my favorite thing about this magazine, the photography is AMAZING. Then we have Mental Floss, The Impossible Issue. This magazine is so cool. It has tons of facts, quizzes and this issue includes an interview with that guy who decided to live life as a goat. And lastly, because, if you haven’t figured it out already, I love makeup. Make-Up Artist is a magazine about, you guessed it, MAKE-UP!! Even if you aren’t into wearing make-up, this magazine is super interesting. It includes gore-y transformations, a story about Pee-Wee’s Big Holiday and of course, tons of product reviews.
If you would like to own your own copy of these magazines, here’s your change to win all five! Plus, a little letter press book called Catabunga II, because what would a giveaway be without a cat related thing? Thank you for supporting my new site, and I hope you take a look around to check out the new stuff!
